SQW:LAB 2020 OPEN STUDIO EVENT
Squareworks Laboratory (SqW:Lab) in Mumbai invites you to join it’s eight creative fellows from Ljubljana, London, Tokyo, Mumbai and Denver to experience the works made during a two week fellowship in Mumbai.
Inspired by a series of ‘Play Projects’, the SqW:Lab studio space and the city around them, the works made are a mix of video, painting, drawing and installation. The ‘Play Projects’ are central to SqW:Lab’s process of exploring the themes of drawing, the domestic and process. The Projects are designed by the four founding fellows (Goto, Shroff, Levine and van Mierlo) and offer the group a series of instructions to use to produce the works. For example, Vishwa Shroff shared a memory of her childhood home and the fellows responded visually in pairs to this story.
This year’s participants are Veeranganakumari Solanki (curator, IN), Kyoko Ebata (artist, JP), Adam Nathaniel Furman (artist, UK), Ana Čavić (artist, SI) alongside founding fellows Katsushi Goto (architect, JPN, IN), Charlie Levine (curator, UK), Vishwa Shroff (artist, IN), and Rose Van Mierlo (critic, US).

The open studio exhibition will open on:
Friday 14 February at 5pm – 8pm | Saturday 15 February 4pm – 4pm

INTRODUCING SqW:Lab 2020 RESEARCH FELLOWS
3rd to 16th FEBRUARY 2020
Squareworks Laboratory (SqW:Lab) welcomes fellows to the second iteration this week with artists, curators and designers from Mumbai, Ljubljana, London, Tokyo and Denver. Playing together in the studio for two weeks, these creatives will collaborate with the four SqW:Lab founders to produce works for an Open Studio presentation in Mumbai on 14th February 2020.
The second Laboratory continues to examine the domestic through drawing while encouraging dialogue around creative practices and processes across disciplines. We continue with a new series of Play Projects that explore curatorial methods, the dolls house and (fictional) narratives. SqW:Lab is an international creative fellowship that begins in Mumbai and expands globally via the Fellows when they return home.
An 80-year-old art deco apartment in Colaba will host the three-month fellowship. Domestic space will be converted into creative space; the creative environment re-thought. SqW:Lab will be an “‘active space’, a hybrid structure that [is] part art school, part community centre and part artistic laboratory”, (Jens Hoffman, Theatre of Exhibitions). Following initial workshops and open studio exhibition, the SqW:Lab fellows will be co-producing a series of collaborative projects during the next three months which will focus on the themes of Drawing, the Domestic, Place and Process.
This year’s participants will be Veeranganakumari Solanki (curator, IN), Kyoto Ebata (artist, JP), Adam Nathaniel Furman (artist, UK), Ana Čavić (artist, SI) alongside founding fellows Katsushi Goto (architect, JPN, IN), Charlie Levine (curator, UK), Vishwa Shroff (artist, IN), and Rose Van Mierlo (critic, US).

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP OPEN STUDIO IN MUMBAI
OPEN TO PUBLIC 16th MARCH 2019
On 16th March 2019, 10 artists from all over the world will conclude the first edition (2018-19) of SquareWorks Laboratory (SqW:Lab) in an open studio in Mumbai.
This concluding event will consist of work made during the three-month fellowship. Each artist was asked to complete a series of ‘Play Projects’ devised by the five core members – a postcard exchange by Vishwa Shroff; Tash Kahn asked fellows to respond to city scenes; Katsushi Goto prompted collaboration between fellows to create a narrative around a fictional architectural space; Charlie Levine’s ‘explored her project, ‘The Tale Tellers’ in which artists were asked to illustrate a piece of text from The Jungle Book; Rosanna van Mierlo’s project concerns the public/private space and the notion of home.
SqW:Lab is an international creative fellowship that began in 2018 in Mumbai and expanded globally throughout 2019. The inaugural 10 fellows are a mix of artists, architects, curators, art writers and creative industry professionals from India, Japan, Hong Kong, UK, USA and Brazil.
“Continuous professional practice accumulates specific knowledge. But it tends to be mundane and requires resetting new challenges. The idea of the lab starts from this points and re-thinking creative environment. 80 years old Bombay art deco apartment is the place all ten professionals gather for an initial short-term workshop.
It is intriguing to imagine how we could rearrange domestic space into a creative and collaborative space.”
Katsushi Goto, Squareworks founder, March 2019

NEW INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP LAUNCHING IN MUMBAI ON 10 NOVEMBER 2018

On November, 10 artists from all over the world will launch SquareWorks Laboratory (SqW:Lab). SqW:Lab is a brand new international creative fellowship that will begin in Mumbai and expand globally throughout 2019. The inaugural 10 fellows are a mix of artists, architects, curators, art writers and creative industry professionals from India, Japan, Hong Kong, UK, USA and Brazil.
An 80-year-old art deco apartment in Colaba will play host to the three-month fellowship. Domestic space will be converted into creative space; the creative environment re-thought. SqW:Lab will be an “‘active space’, a hybrid structure that [is] part art school, part community centre and part artistic laboratory”, (Jens Hoffman, Theatre of Exhibitions). Following initial workshops and the inaugural exhibition in Mumbai on 10 November 2018, the SqW:Lab fellows will be co-producing a series of collaborative projects during the next three months which will focus on the themes of Drawing, the Domestic, Place and Process.
This year’s participants will be Sutapa Biswas (artist, UK), Gustavo S Ferro (artist, BR / UK), Katsushi Goto (architect, JPN, IN), Tash Kahn (artist, UK), Sameer Kulavoor (artist, IN), Charlie Levine (curator, UK), John Ros (artist / curator, US), Vishwa Shroff (artist, IN), Thomas Tsang (architect, HK) and Rosanna Van Mierlo (art writer, UK / US).
“Durational dialogues permit narrative and mnemonic evolvement, allowing technical and theoretical exchanges that remain otherwise illusive in one’s own practice. Initiating an exchange platform therefore made sense. To come together for short periods with professionals from different fields that share a common interest in spatial observations and alterations, but come to it from a distinct point of view.”
Vishwa Shroff, Squareworks founder, September 2018
